This workshop was led by Mrs Ann John. The workshop explored the intersection of data science and the US Space Force, with a particular focus on the safety group at the SSC division. The workshop began with an overview of the US Space Force and its mission to protect US interests in space. It then moved on to explore how data science is being used to improve safety and efficiency in space operations.
The event was hosted by a the current president of GRIDS Prashant Singh! The workship was aimed to introduce GitHub and basic Git commands to beginners!
The workshop started with an introduction to GitHub, which covered the basics of version control, repositories, commits, branches, and pull requests. The instructor also explained how GitHub can be used to collaborate with others and manage version control in projects.
The PowerBI and Tableau event workshop was a great opportunity for everyone to learn more about the two most popular data visualization tools in the industry. The workshop featured presentations and hands-on exercises designed to help attendees learn how to use PowerBI and Tableau to create engaging and insightful visualizations.
This talk was led by our very own Satwant Singh! Satwant is a final year Applied Data Science student who has extensive research and industry experience in machine learning.
Graph neural networks are a type of deep learning algorithm that are designed to work with graph-structured data.
During the talk, Satwant provided an overview of what Graph Neural Networks are, how they work, and their applications in various fields, such as social network analysis, recommender systems, and drug discovery. He also discussed the challenges of working with graph-structured data and how graph neural networks can help overcome some of these challenges.
Social media platforms have lately become the primary means of communication and source of news for billions of people around the world. This growth in activity on platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Reddit, has made them rich sources of data for understanding how people interact with and are influenced by information online. Given the importance of computational methods in analyzing this data, we were very excited to host a talk by Ashok Deb, a USC CS PhD student and currently-serving, Active-duty Army officer, on the topic of mining social media and using Twitter for research purposes. Ashok has extensive experience of working with social media data in applications areas ranging from political elections and cyber security to social consumerism and health behaviors, and shared with us his experience, insights, and advice on analyzing sociopolitical campaigns on Twitter and the challenges it holds.
With career fairs right around the corner, our first talk for Spring 2020 was a timely one on the topic of technical recruiting. Emily Chen, a current USC CS PhD student and former software engineer at Cisco Systems (where was part of the campus team as a technical recruiter and interviewer for 3 recruiting seasons at top schools), shared her experience, insights, and advice for those navigating this process right now or planning to do so in the future.
Josh Chapman, Manager of Data Engineering at The Honest Company, stopped by GRIDS and presented on the topic of Data Engineering. He provided a great overview of the subject and also dove into tips from real-world experience and industry best practices. GRIDS’s fearless leader Samar Haider led us on a journey through Deep Learning with Python, starting from the basics of machine learning and deep learning all the way to today’s applications of the technology as well as how anyone can get started using freely available tools. GRIDS members had a very spooky treat on Halloween as Romi Alsaid, a Computer Science master’s student at USC, presented on the topic of Data Visualization. She took us through topics such as information visualization, visualization design, and the tools used in this broad field, as well as answer our questions at the end.
