The PowerBI and Tableau event workshop was a great opportunity for everyone to learn more about the two most popular data visualization tools in the industry. The workshop featured presentations and hands-on exercises designed to help attendees learn how to use PowerBI and Tableau to create engaging and insightful visualizations.
This talk was led by our very own Satwant Singh! Satwant is a final year Applied Data Science student who has extensive research and industry experience in machine learning.
Graph neural networks are a type of deep learning algorithm that are designed to work with graph-structured data.
During the talk, Satwant provided an overview of what Graph Neural Networks are, how they work, and their applications in various fields, such as social network analysis, recommender systems, and drug discovery. He also discussed the challenges of working with graph-structured data and how graph neural networks can help overcome some of these challenges.
Social media platforms have lately become the primary means of communication and source of news for billions of people around the world. This growth in activity on platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Reddit, has made them rich sources of data for understanding how people interact with and are influenced by information online. Given the importance of computational methods in analyzing this data, we were very excited to host a talk by Ashok Deb, a USC CS PhD student and currently-serving, Active-duty Army officer, on the topic of mining social media and using Twitter for research purposes. Ashok has extensive experience of working with social media data in applications areas ranging from political elections and cyber security to social consumerism and health behaviors, and shared with us his experience, insights, and advice on analyzing sociopolitical campaigns on Twitter and the challenges it holds.
With career fairs right around the corner, our first talk for Spring 2020 was a timely one on the topic of technical recruiting. Emily Chen, a current USC CS PhD student and former software engineer at Cisco Systems (where was part of the campus team as a technical recruiter and interviewer for 3 recruiting seasons at top schools), shared her experience, insights, and advice for those navigating this process right now or planning to do so in the future.
What a way to to start the new semester! Thank you to everyone who attended our kickoff event for the Spring 2020 semester. We had 20 projects pitched by faculty members from across different schools at USC to an equally diverse audience of over 150 students. We’re very excited about all the project ideas and can’t wait to see the work all of you do in them over the course of this semester!

We are especially proud of all the great work the teams put in on their projects and accompanying presentations and posters! The event was attended by numerous students and faculty from different schools at USC, all of whom were highly impressed by the quality of work they saw.
Josh Chapman, Manager of Data Engineering at The Honest Company, stopped by GRIDS and presented on the topic of Data Engineering. He provided a great overview of the subject and also dove into tips from real-world experience and industry best practices. We really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experience with us, Josh!
GRIDS’s fearless leader Samar Haider led us on a journey through Deep Learning with Python, starting from the basics of machine learning and deep learning all the way to today’s applications of the technology as well as how anyone can get started using freely available tools. GRIDS members had a very spooky treat on Halloween as Romi Alsaid, a Computer Science master’s student at USC, presented on the topic of Data Visualization. She took us through topics such as information visualization, visualization design, and the tools used in this broad field, as well as answer our questions at the end. You really know your stuff, Romi, and we appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us.
GRIDS partnered with the International Data Engineering and Science Association (IDEAS) again this fall and had 40+ members sign up to attend the conference. We enjoyed a full day of sessions in tracks like AI, Big Data, and FinTech at the Los Angeles Convention Center, just a hop, skip, and jump away from USC. We look forward to continuing this partnership through the years!
